EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Abby Anderson

Posted by Patria Henriques on Saturday, June 1, 2024

Abby Anderson is an exciting new talent in the Country genre whose breakout single “Dance Away My Broken Heart” was co-written with an array of superstars including Kelsea Ballerini, Thomas Rhett, Ashley Gorley, Rhett Akins, and Jesse Frasure.

Here we speak exclusively to Abby Anderson to discuss her new music, writing with legendary country artists, future plans and more:

When did you first decide to pursue music as a career choice?

I have always known I was going to be in front of people and in the public eye in some capacity. I always knew I was good at putting on a show, always loved making people smile. So when my parents put me in piano lessons at age five, I found pretty quickly that I was going to entertain through music.

How would you describe your sound to new listeners?

I would like to think my sound is soulful. It’s soulful in the way that you can hear my heart when I sing. Country, pop, blue eyed soul.

You’re currently touring with Chase Rice and will open for Brett Eldredge this year, how did these slots come about?

God. And the best dang team on the planet. My booking agent Kylen Sharpe over at CAA is a baller boss. I always say, the only thing I’m really better at than most people is surrounding myself with incredible people who are smarter than me.

“Dance Away My Broken Heart” was penned by Kelsea Ballerini and Thomas Rhett, along with Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley and Jesse Frasure. How did it come about that you cut the song?

I LOVE THIS SONG!! My label CEO, Gordon Kerr sent me the song and I flipped out when I heard it. After he saw my excitement about it, he then told me who wrote it which was really just the cherry on top. Kelsea is an incredible artist and I admire her talent and writing ability. Very thankful she wrote on this smashmagoo.

Tell us about your current single, “Make Him Wait” and the process of writing it.

“Make Him Wait” is my very first single to country radio and I gotta tell you, it’s crazy to me that I even get to say that. I have a first single to flippin country radio… I am one lucky girl. But yeah, that morning I was writing with the amazing Josh Kerr and the legendary Tom Douglas. Pretty great room to be in. I walked in with a little idea about a crush I had at the time and Josh asked me “well Abbs how are you gonna get this guy?” And I told him in a joking way, “I’m gonna make the boy work for it! I’m gonna make him wait!” Lol. We had the song done in 45 mins.

How does it feel to be working with such established artists and writers so early on in your career?

I hope I can say this in the most humble way possible, but I literally told myself from the time I started piano lessons that I would be working with the absolute best this industry could offer one day. So it’s not surprising. It’s a literal goal come true. I believe you are who you surround yourself with and I want to be a master of my craft. In order to do that, I need to learn from the masters themselves and that’s what I have the blessing to do. I feel like I am surrounded by my own personal yodas haha. I am a sponge and learning every single day.

Can we expect an album from you soon?
ABSOLUTELY!! My first EP comes out Sept. 7th which will have five songs on it. I want to take my time when it comes to an album. I want to always put out the best content I possibly can and have been writing my butt off. So, soon(:

Are there any artists who are inspiring you at the moment?

SO MANYYY!! One that I am obsessed with right now is Lucie Silvas. I think she is brilliant.

You’re very much on the rise in the States, but can we expect to see you in the UK soon?
Well thank you!! Haha and heck yessss I am blown away by how many UK listeners reach out to me and message me. I love all the love and so ready to put a new stamp in my passport.

What are your long term career goals?
Oh goodness how long can this article be? Haha! I have a lot. If you walk into my bathroom you’ll find a big poster that lays em all out from this year to five years to ten years from now. And you’ll find phrases like “I am on of the top selling artists of my time” and “stadium tour” and “Grammy’s” but at the end of the day, none of that matters if I am not bringing joy and light into this world through the gift God gave me. I don’t know how I’ll ever measure that or if you even can but right now I’d like to think I’m doing a pretty good job. That’s all I want. Do what I love and do a whole bunch of good doin it.
